Nestled in the tranquil surroundings of Arco da Calheta, Portugal, Rochao’s Bar stands out as a charming and authentic cafe experience that captures the heart of local hospitality. This inviting hideaway is much more than a typical coffee stop—it’s a slice of Madeira’s soul served with warmth and homemade delights that linger deliciously on the palate.
Rochao’s Bar specializes in an array of lovingly crafted traditional treats and beverages that define its unique appeal. The homemade Orange Cake is a standout, boasting a perfect balance of citrus brightness and moist, tender crumb that melts delightfully with each bite. Complementing this is the celebrated local drink, Poncha—a warming, citrus-infused spirit that locals cherish and visitors quickly grow to love. For those seeking something distinct, the menu also offers Eukaliptų Likeris, a eucalyptus liqueur that refreshes the senses, alongside robust espresso-based Poncha Bica, merging the energy of coffee with traditional Madeira flavors.
But it’s not just about the drinks and cakes. Patrons can indulge in hearty, comforting offerings such as Sopa de Trigo—a traditional wheat soup—and intriguing snacks like Eingelegte Bohnen (pickled beans), imbuing the visit with a rustic and genuinely local essence. The inclusion of homemade honey-laden lemon tea (Chá de Limão Com Mel de Abelha) adds a floral sweetness that soothes and delights, rounding off the flavor journey with finesse.
Visitors repeatedly praise the warm, welcoming atmosphere created by the owner, whose genuine kindness and hospitality transform this cafe into a community haven. According to John Mysliwiec, Rochao’s Bar is “a diamond in the rough” with “very welcoming atmosphere” and some of the best Poncha he’s encountered—such testimonials reflect the heartfelt care poured into every aspect of the experience. Likewise, Gabri M speaks to the peaceful ambiance accented by friendly resident cats, making it an idyllic spot to savor delicacies and cappuccinos in quiet harmony.
The location itself enhances the magic of Rochao’s Bar. Situated amid nature’s serenity, it serves as the perfect pause during hikes or exploration, as Margot Colenbrander notes: “Coffee in the middle of the woods, on the way to beautiful hikes,” describing how the calm setting invites visitors to return day after day. Even language barriers melt away here; Micha D’s account illustrates how connection transcends words—through smiles, shared moments, and the universal language of good food and kindness.
What truly stays with you after stepping out of Rochao’s Bar is a sense of having discovered something heartfelt and authentic—a rare find where tradition, flavor, and human warmth come together seamlessly. It’s an intimate, unpretentious spot that invites you to slow down, savor the simple pleasures, and enjoy a taste of Madeira that feels like home.
Whether you’re seeking a refreshing Poncha, a slice of homemade cake, or a quiet refuge to gather your thoughts, Rochao’s Bar in Arco da Calheta promises an experience that’s rich in flavor and full of gentle soul—a true gem worth revisiting time and again.
This is a diamond in the rough. The owner, is such a nice sweet lady. Very welcoming atmosphere. The homemade cakes are delicious as well as one of the better Poncha’s I have had. If you are lucky enough, the owner may give you some of her homemade treats. I highly recommend going here!!!! Will definitely be back.
Coffee in the middle of the woods, on the way to beautiful hikes. Came back two days in a row because of the peaceful place. Lovely lady which helped with the fastest road!
Wie skiped the mainstream Café at the end of the 25fountains Walk at rabaçal because we have seen this place during our drive to rabaçal. The hostess was just lovely. We Spike no portugese and she wasn‘t able to understand anything than portugese… But if you want you can understand each other without the same language. Wie had tasty cake and coffee there. Wie had the whole spot for ourselves to enjoy
Amazing place! Very welcoming and quiet scenery. There are also friendly cats that like to hang out around the property :). 10/10 amazing food. The cakes are delicious and the cappuccinos compliment them very well.
Beautiful little stop off for coffee and the most delicious home made cake. The woman behind the bar was lovely. Way better pricing for tourists. I recommend
Just what was needed after a long levada walk. Great friendly service with a welcome coffee and molasses cake. Off the beaten track, but great when heading down off the plateau.
